Laos? Yes it's
on the map now. Grey hairs with suitcases are joining backpackers in
visiting this mellow if little known country. After meeting a steady
stream of travellers with glowing reports we thought we'd give it a
visit. Laos is landlocked in south east Asia. It's east of Thailand,
West of Vietnam, north of Cambodia, South of China. The population is a
small fraction of it's neighbours at six million in a land area of that
of Britain. Mountainous, rural with a unhurried laid-back vibe. It
wasn't always this tranquil though. During the Vietnamese-American war
it was a crossroads for Vietcong supply routes to the south which
attracted millions of tonnes of bomb from the US Airforce. The general
instability of the wars lead to the overthrow of the six century old
monarchy based in Luang Prabang and a communist takeover. I hope you
enjoy this glimpse of it's people and culture. |
